Riot engineers bring deep knowledge of specific technical areas but also value the opportunity to work in multiple broader domains. As an Engineering Manager, you’ll offer creative solutions to organizational design. You’ll also serve as a mentor for different engineers, overseeing performance management, growth opportunities, and instilling balanced models for performance.

As the Engineering Manager in our Los Angeles office, you’ll build + lead an Engineering team delivering value to Riot’s largest player base, China. You’ll guide 2 important strategic projects that require deep technical skills and the ability to create cross-company collaboration between Riot and Tencent:

  • Provide high-quality products and experiences for millions of CN players
  • Engineer products that support and scale our China business

Responsibilities:

  • Lead + develop a team of Engineers to a premier standard (People Leadership)
  • Ensure the team has a sound technical vision + roadmap.
  • Use your gamer empathy to inform technical decision-making (Product Sense).
  • Manage the health and performance management of your team.
  • Recruit for your team.
  • Participate in Code Reviews for technical work.
  • Mentor and Lead your team in developing engineering practices.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Technical experience: Broad theoretical knowledge and practical application of Software Engineering and Site Reliability Engineering principles to global-scale distributed systems. You’ve spent 7+ years taking on serious engineering challenges, both as a developer and as an operator of essential Production systems.
  • Experienced engineering leader: You have 5+ years of experience in Engineering Management, and are passionate about growing your team’s capabilities + impact. You use a systematic approach to coach your team. You’ve participated in the full hiring manager lifecycle, from hiring + recruiting, to performance management, to comp and performance planning.
  • Problem solver: You’re able to quickly resolve issues with people, process and technologies. You use empathy to build and repair relationships with diverse teams and products. You remove roadblocks for your teams, and give them the tools they need to be effective.
  • Clear communicator: You create clarity in communication, by being concise and articulate. You listen well, you build positive relationships with partners, and bring visibility to technical decisions made on your team to the broader company. You’re fluent in Chinese and English, and can guide collaboration with Chinese-speaking engineers.
  • Strong decision-maker: You have a framework for making decisions. You make trade-offs explicit, when balancing the long-term strategies and short-term tactics. You know when to call for help.

Applicable Technologies:

  • Modern programming language (Go, Python, Java, Ruby, ...)
  • Build + designing RESTful API interfaces
  • Common data persistence and communication technologies (SQL, NoSQL, Message Queue)
  • Best practices for building large-scale, highly-available distributed systems
